#BNB Smart Chain Staking Guide: Getting Started with Validators and Delegators

Reference: Binance Academy (original link)

What is BSC staking?

BNB Smart Chain (BSC) adopts a consensus mechanism called PoSA (Proof of Staked Authority), which combines the characteristics of PoA and DPoS. Validators in the network are responsible for packaging transactions, producing blocks, and receiving BNB rewards. Unlike proof of work, the selection of validators is mainly based on the amount of BNB staked, rather than computing power. BSC currently maintains 45 active validators: the first 21 are Cabinet and the last 24 are Candidate. In each block generation cycle, 18 people will be selected from the Cabinet and 3 people will be selected from the Candidate to form a consensus set of 21 people. Validators with more staked coins have a higher probability of being selected and therefore receive more rewards.

For ordinary holders, a common way to pledge BNB is to become a delegator, entrust the BNB in hand to a trusted validator, and share the block rewards without running a node.

Verifier responsibilities and thresholds

Becoming a validator requires meeting hardware requirements, running a full BSC node, and staking at least 10,000 BNB. The self-delegated portion also requires a minimum of 2,000 BNB. To enter the active set you also need to be in the top 45 by total staked amount. Therefore, validators usually require a large amount of entrusted financial support, and the threshold is relatively high.

How to participate as a principal

The delegation process is relatively simple: connect a compatible wallet (such as Trust Wallet) to the BSC staking interface, select a validator and confirm delegation. Rewards usually start the next day and are distributed around 00:00 UTC every day. However, the actual rate of return is affected by the total pledge amount of the entire network, validator commission and node performance. Before delegating, you should check the validator’s historical performance, online rate and commission rate. If the validator is slashed due to malicious behavior such as double signing, the principal's pledge may also be damaged.

The delegator can also transfer the pledge to other validators through re-delegation. If you need to exit, you can release the delegation, but you will enter a locked-up unstaking period, during which no rewards will be generated and BNB cannot be withdrawn immediately. Please refer to the BNB Chain official documentation for the specific duration.

Verification of costs and benefits in staking

The income from staking is not fixed and changes dynamically. In addition to the mechanics of the network itself, you also need to pay attention to the following points:

  • Validator Commission: The validator will deduct a certain percentage from the rewards you receive as service fees. The commissions for different validators vary and need to be checked.
  • Network fee: Operations such as delegation, re-delegation or de-delegation will consume BNB as gas on the chain. The cost cannot be ignored when the frequency of operations is high.
  • Lock-up period: There is a lock-in period for unstaking, during which funds cannot be used and market opportunities may be missed.
  • Additional fees from the platform or exchange: If you participate in staking through an exchange or third-party platform, the platform may charge additional fees or be linked to VIP levels. VIP customers may enjoy different rates, but not all platforms provide rebates.
  • Rebate Mechanism: Some promotion channels (such as CoinRebate) will provide rebates, but the rebates are self-operated promotions of the platform and have nothing to do with Binance officials. Please check the platform terms, rates, rebate ratio and compliance yourself before using it, and do not trust any revenue promises.

Never ignore the underlying assets and locked-in risks because of rebates or high-yield promotions. Staking is a long-term behavior and should be carefully decided based on your own liquidity needs.

Conclusion

BSC staking offers BNB holders a way to participate in the security of the network, but it is not risk-free. Verifiers need technical capabilities and high pledges, while delegators need to evaluate the quality of the verifier and their own capital arrangements. No matter which role you choose, study the network's rules, review official documentation, and be wary of any third-party propaganda.
