Platinum and palladium are often called "white metals," but they are not far from everyday life. They are found in automobile exhaust catalytic converters, electronic components, and even some medical equipment. Demand follows the industrial cycle, and supply is concentrated in a few production areas, so price fluctuations are often more violent than gold. Binance Futures has made these two metals into USDT-denominated perpetual contracts, with the codes XPTUSDT and XPDUSDT respectively. You don’t have to actually buy a few ounces of metal to put at home, and you don’t have to worry about warehousing and insurance. You can directly participate in the rise and fall of prices through contracts.
Let’s get one basic point straight: these contracts are cash-settled. In other words, whether you make a profit or a loss, it will all be settled in USDT in the end, and no one will send a piece of platinum to your home. The price is anchored to the real-world value of an ounce of platinum or palladium, but the trade itself is completed on the Binance Futures platform. If you think industrial demand will rise and supply will tighten, go long; conversely, if you think prices are going to fall, go short. The logic is the same as traditional futures, but the threshold and operation methods have changed.
There are several headaches with traditional metal futures. For example, trading hours are fixed and the market is closed on weekends, but a lot of news that affects supply breaks out on weekends. If there is an accident in a major mining area, or a country suddenly restricts exports, you can only wait until the market opens on Monday. Binance futures are traded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you see the news in the early hours of Sunday morning, you can handle your position at that time. Another threshold is contract size. The value of one hand of platinum or palladium futures in the traditional market is very high, which is not very friendly to ordinary traders. Binance Futures supports decimal trading, and you can open a position with much smaller funds than on traditional exchanges, with the exact amount depending on the contract price, your chosen leverage, and margin requirements.
Speaking of leverage, this is the most tempting and dangerous part of contract trading. Leverage allows you to control larger positions with less margin and improve capital efficiency. But it's a double-edged sword: if the market moves a little in the negative direction, the losses will be magnified. Palladium is an inherently volatile product, coupled with high leverage, a small correction may break through your margin and trigger forced liquidation. So don’t pull up all the leverage as soon as you come up, first think about how much retracement you can tolerate.
Perpetual contracts have no expiration date, so how to ensure that the contract price will not move further away from the spot price? It depends on the funding rate. The mechanism sounds mysterious, but it's actually very simple: every once in a while (usually 4 or 8 hours), longs and shorts pay each other a fee. Note that this money is not given to the exchange, but is settled directly between traders. If the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts; if it is negative, shorts pay longs. Sometimes you can get a small periodic income on the side of collecting money, but the funding rate can change at any time, so don't treat it as a stable income.
The ordering process is not complicated, but there are a few details worth paying attention to. After logging into Binance, enter the contract page and select the USD(S)-M contract. Enter XPTUSDT or XPDUSDT in the search box, or look under the TradFi category. If your contract account balance is zero, you can use the transfer, currency purchase or flash swap functions to recharge. People who use contracts for the first time need to open a contract account and may also need to do a brief risk assessment. Before placing an order, remember to take a look at the margin mode in the upper right corner. In the cross-margin mode, all assets and positions in your contract account will be calculated together with the margin and liquidation price. The platinum position may be liquidated due to the loss of the palladium position, even if they are two different trading pairs. The isolated position mode limits the margin to a single position without affecting each other. If a novice is not sure, he can start with isolated positions first. At least when he loses money, other positions will not be affected.
Don’t be too verbose about risk control. Platinum and palladium are more volatile than gold because they rely heavily on industrial demand and concentrated supply. If the technical route of a catalytic converter changes, or a certain mining area stops production, the price can jump several points in an instant. Common protection methods include: setting stop loss orders to limit a single loss within an acceptable range; controlling position size and not taking any chances; and avoiding excessive leverage during periods of high volatility or low liquidity. These are not guaranteed ways to make money, but they will allow you to survive longer when the market takes a turn for the worse.
One final reminder: Contract trading involves the risk of forced liquidation, and leverage will amplify losses. This article only introduces the mechanism and operating procedures and does not constitute any trading advice. Before taking action, it is more important to use a small amount of money to familiarize yourself with the interface and the rhythm of changes in funding rates, rather than rushing to place an order.
