ETH closed the week at 2422.42 USDT, down 4.47%

Binance ETHUSDT perpetual moved from 2535.66 USDT to 2422.42 USDT this week, a decline of 4.47%, ranking 150th out of a 200-week sample and sitting in the latter half of that sample, with 50 weeks weaker than this one. The phrase "US Ethereum ETF net outflows for 10 straight days" kept showing up on the Square, at 163 posts and 9,584 views. Tight funding conditions and a weaker price get told as one story, but for anyone trading contracts the first thing worth checking is the rhythm inside the week: it did not fall in a straight line, there were bounces, they just did not hold.

2026-10-152420.8 USDT2422.42 USDT0.07%

Three days stand out. On 2026-10-11 the close was 2535.66 USDT, up 1.23%, the only push back above 2535 this week and the starting point of the weekly open. On 2026-10-12 price dropped from 2535.66 USDT to 2445.84 USDT, down 3.54%, giving back in one day what the prior session had gained. On 2026-10-14 it fell again from 2496.9 USDT to 2420.8 USDT, down 3.05%, pressing the weekly low to 2420.8 USDT. The close on 2026-10-15 was 2422.42 USDT, up 0.07%, basically flat against the prior close, neither extending the drop nor recovering much of it.

Read together, the week looked like push up, roll over, roll over again, then stall. From 2026-10-09 through 2026-10-11 three sessions closed higher, carrying price from 2474.02 USDT to 2535.66 USDT. The down days on 2026-10-12 and 2026-10-14 erased that and more. The 2026-10-15 close was flat. Traders know this shape: bounces cluster in narrow windows, declines tend to press continuously. The ETF outflow narrative sits close in time to those two down days, but the daily candles only show how price moved, not who was selling.

Against 200 weeks, this one is not extreme

2026-08-171875.21 USDT2462.58 USDT31.32%

The number of weeks stronger than this one is 149, this week ranks 150th, and its position is in the latter half of the sample. More than half of the 200 weeks were stronger, many of them gainers: 2023-01-09 rose 20.46%, 2024-05-20 rose 24.68%, 2025-05-05 rose 39.03%, 2025-07-14 rose 26.44%, 2026-08-17 rose 31.32%. The open and close for each are listed above, so the scale difference is visible at a glance.

Some weeks that fell less than this one also count as stronger, such as 2022-12-26 down 1.48%, 2023-01-30 down 1.01%, 2023-02-20 down 2.38%, 2024-04-29 down 3.89%, 2025-10-13 down 4.08%, and 2026-05-25 down 4.42%. These are down weeks too, they just fell less than this one, so they still rank ahead. That detail is easy to miss: the ranking is not simply gainers first and losers last, a smaller decline is itself a form of relative strength.

The number of weeks weaker than this one is 50, a quarter of the 200-week sample. In other words, this week's decline sits in the weaker bracket historically, but not at the extreme. The latter-half position means that most of the past 200 weeks looked better than this one on the weekly chart.

Popular posts on the Square argue that US Ethereum ETF net outflows for 10 straight days are the direct cause of this round of ETH weakness, with money steadily leaving Ethereum-related products and price lacking support (relayed, not the view of this site). Such posts usually put ETF flows and contract price on the same chart, using the continuity of outflows to explain the continuity of declines.

Other posts focus on the contract side, arguing that funding rates on perpetuals are more likely to shift during outflow streaks, changing the cost structure for long positions (relayed, not the view of this site). These focus on positioning and rates rather than spot flows themselves.

Both point the same direction: tighter funding conditions. Worth stating clearly, though, is that ETF flow data is published with a lag while daily prices print in real time. The two lining up in time does not prove the former caused the latter. Square discussion is useful as a read on sentiment and attention, not as confirmed causation.

Three honest points

First, gaps and consecutive down days are where rhythm gets misread. On 2026-10-12 price opened straight from 2535.66 USDT to 2445.84 USDT, and on 2026-10-14 it fell from 2496.9 USDT to 2420.8 USDT. Both moves happened inside very short windows. On a daily chart it is one candle; on a minute chart it is a process. Where the stop sits and how big the position is changes the outcome entirely.

Second, high leverage has no buffer in a week like this. The weekly decline was 4.47%, but the intraweek swing from 2535.66 USDT to 2420.8 USDT was wider than the weekly figure, and leverage magnifies intraweek swings, not the weekly result. Many added after the up day on 2026-10-11 and were carried out by the decline on 2026-10-14.

Third, neither funding rates nor ETF flows are real-time signals. ETF data lags, funding rates reflect current long-short cost, and neither tells you where the next daily candle goes. Ranking 150th with a latter-half position is a conclusion you can only reach looking back; on 2026-10-12 nobody knew where the week would close.

On costs

The Binance contract default maker fee is 0.02% and the default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%, which puts the effective maker fee at 0.016% and the effective taker fee at 0.04% after the rebate.

At the default tier, a taker open plus a taker close both price at 0.05%; if both sides fill as maker, both price at 0.02%. After the rebate, maker costs 0.016% and taker costs 0.04%, and that is the friction anyone trading short-term in a week like this actually faces.

Costs do not change directional calls, but they change the result of trading in and out frequently. This week had two large-range days, 2026-10-12 and 2026-10-14, and the more you go back and forth, the faster the fees accumulate.
