BTCUSDT rose 3.96% this week but fell 2.09% on 2026-09-23. Russia's central bank listing crypto as a financial market risk may weigh on sentiment.

A 3.96% week, but the last two days gave the mood back

BTCUSDT closed the week at 84355.2 USDT, a weekly move of 3.96%. That does not sound bad. Spread the daily candles out, though, and the picture changes: 2026-09-21 gained 6.7% in a single day, 2026-09-23 lost 2.09%, and 2026-09-24 finished flat at 84355.2 USDT. In other words, the week's gain came almost entirely from one session, and the following three days gave part of it back. At the same time, Russia's central bank listed crypto as a financial market risk. That headline landed while the tape was already softening, so its effect on sentiment matters more than any direct hit to price.

The week's candles: the moves sit in two days

2026-09-2484355.284355.20%

Three rows carry the information. On 2026-09-18, the pair opened at 76385.8 USDT and closed at 80863 USDT, up 5.86%, moving from the 76k area up through 80k. On 2026-09-21, it opened at 81144 USDT and closed at 86578.7 USDT, up 6.7%, the strongest session of the week and the week's high. On 2026-09-23, it opened at 86158.6 USDT and closed at 84355.1 USDT, down 2.09%, giving back the prior day's position. On 2026-09-24 it opened and closed at 84355.2 USDT, flat.

Read together, the rhythm is clear: two sessions up, three sessions giving back. 2026-09-19 gained 0.45% and 2026-09-20 lost 0.1%, both nearly motionless; 2026-09-22 lost 0.49%, also small. What decided the weekly result was the 2026-09-21 green candle and the 2026-09-23 red one. On the weekly measure, the pair opened the week at 81144 USDT and last closed at 84355.2 USDT, up 3.96%. That figure describes the week that finished, not the current tape โ€” the flat close on 2026-09-24 shows neither side gained an edge at that level.

Against 200 weekly samples, this week does not rank near the top

BTCUSDT has 200 weekly samples, and 53 weeks were stronger than this one. A 3.96% gain sits in the upper-middle of the sample, but it is not a strong week by the sample's own standard.

Among the stronger weeks, the range is wide. The week of 2026-08-17 opened at 62876 USDT and closed at 77719.1 USDT, up 23.61%; the week of 2023-03-13 opened at 21986.2 USDT and closed at 27955.7 USDT, up 27.15%; the week of 2024-02-26 opened at 51764.9 USDT and closed at 63178.5 USDT, up 22.05%. Below those, 2023-01-09 rose 21.95%, 2024-11-04 rose 16.94%, 2023-06-19 rose 15.68%, and 2023-10-23 rose 15.17%. All of these are higher than this week's 3.96%.

Some weeks were close. 2022-11-28 rose 4.12%, 2024-12-02 rose 4.05%, 2025-11-24 rose 4.05%, 2025-12-29 rose 4.07%, 2025-08-04 rose 4.47%, 2026-03-30 rose 4.58%, 2026-05-04 rose 4.65%, and 2023-01-23 rose 4.56%. Each is higher than 3.96%, though not by much. The point worth stating plainly: with 53 stronger weeks, more than a quarter of the 200-week sample outperformed this one, so this week is not a standout.

Popular posts on the Square argue that Russia's central bank listing crypto as a financial market risk is a tightening regulatory signal that could weigh on overall crypto sentiment (relayed, not this site's view). Such posts usually avoid specific price levels and speak to direction: a stricter regulatory tone makes capital more cautious and pulls risk appetite down.

Other popular posts tie the headline to the tape, arguing that after the 2.09% drop on 2026-09-23 the market was already hesitant, and the news simply gave that hesitation a reason (relayed, not this site's view). The implication is that the headline may not be the main cause, but it affects which side is willing to move first over the following days.

What needs separating is that these are opinions, not established facts. A central bank statement can move sentiment, but how sentiment transmits into price and how fast is not something anyone can answer in advance. Reading popular posts as a gauge of market mood is reasonable; treating them as a trading basis is not.

Three things that are easy to overlook

Gaps amplify sentiment on contract daily candles. On 2026-09-18 the pair opened at 76385.8 USDT and closed at 80863 USDT; on 2026-09-21 it opened at 81144 USDT and closed at 86578.7 USDT. Both bodies are long. A long body means the entry costs of longs and shorts that day differ widely, and the next session's open tends to unsettle the prior day's holders. The consecutive down closes on 2026-09-22 (open 86578.8 USDT, close 86158.6 USDT) and 2026-09-23 (open 86158.6 USDT, close 84355.1 USDT) show exactly that.

High leverage suffers most in this structure. The first two sessions rose fast and the next three gave back fast; a leveraged position on the wrong side sees its drawdown magnified, and even on the right side the swings can shake it out first. This is not an argument against leverage, but in a week that alternates a 6.7% up day with a 2.09% down day, position sizing matters more than directional conviction.

Funding rates flip back and forth during a choppy give-back phase. When price cannot hold a high level, the tug-of-war over funding becomes frequent and the rate's direction can change from day to day. For holders, that means the cost of carrying a position is not fixed and needs to be counted.

One more plain truth: any week's gain is only a conclusion in hindsight. When 2026-09-21 rose 6.7%, nobody knew the next three days would give back; when 2026-09-24 closed flat, nobody knew where the next week would go. Treating a completed weekly candle as a basis for judgment tends to erase the uncertainty that existed at the time.

On fees, the numbers are settled

The default maker fee on Binance contracts is 0.02%, and the default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%. After the rebate, the effective maker fee is 0.016% and the effective taker fee is 0.04%.

These three figures differ from the price data above: they do not change because of Russia's central bank statement, and they do not change because of this week's 3.96% gain or the 2.09% drop on 2026-09-23. For short-term traders moving in and out within a week, fees are a real cost that gets deducted; for swing traders the cost is smaller, but it is not zero.

Getting fees straight and getting the tape straight are two separate things. When the tape is unclear, at least the cost is knowable in advance.
