A 4.34% weekly drop, ranking 166th out of 200 weeks

BTCUSDT moved from 86482.8 USDT to 82731.7 USDT this week, a decline of 4.34%. In the same weekly sample of 200 weeks, 165 weeks were stronger, placing this week at 166th and in the back half of the sample. In other words, most weeks over the past roughly four years looked better than this one. The IMF exemption for El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings drew heavy discussion, but the tape did not treat it as an upward trigger, instead weakening through the back end of the week. For contract traders, the real signal here is not the news itself but the gap between news and price: attention rose while price fell, and positions often follow attention.

Three days tell most of the story. On 2026-10-04, price ran from 84710.5 USDT to 86482.8 USDT, up 2.09%, the only meaningful push higher and the source of this week's opening level of 86482.8 USDT. Then on 2026-10-07, price fell from 85507.6 USDT to 83281.9 USDT, down 2.6%, giving back the ground built earlier in one move. By 2026-10-08, price moved from 83281.9 USDT to 82731.7 USDT, down 0.66%, closing near the week's low. Two declines in three days, each closer to the weekly low, is how the 4.34% weekly decline was built.

What the stronger weeks actually gained

2023-03-1321986.2 USDT27955.7 USDT27.15%

2026-08-1762876 USDT77719.1 USDT23.61%

These are the opposite-direction weeks in the sample. The week of 2023-03-13 ran from 21986.2 USDT to 27955.7 USDT, up 27.15%; 2026-08-17 ran from 62876 USDT to 77719.1 USDT, up 23.61%; 2024-02-26 ran from 51764.9 USDT to 63178.5 USDT, up 22.05%; 2023-01-09 ran from 17124.6 USDT to 20882.7 USDT, up 21.95%. Placing those raw values side by side with this week's 86482.8 USDT to 82731.7 USDT makes the direction plain. This week ranks 166th out of 200 weeks including the current one, in the back half of the sample, and that position needs no extra interpretation.

Trending posts on the Square argue that the IMF exemption for El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings is a signal that sovereign nations holding Bitcoin are moving toward compliance, and that such events shift the psychological expectations of long-term holders (paraphrased, not the view of this site). Some posts pair this with the BTCUSDT weekly chart and read the gap between positive news and weak price as a classic "sell the news" pattern (paraphrased, not the view of this site). Others are more cautious, arguing that a single country's holding policy has limited effect on global pricing and that flows and positioning still decide short-term direction (paraphrased, not the view of this site). Each view has its own logic, but all of them are opinions. The price answer this week was -4.34%, and there is still a long way between that and the phrase "compliance signal."

Three plain truths

First, the direction of news and the direction of price can diverge for a long time. The compliance discussion around El Salvador's holdings concerns institutional change on a multi-year scale, while this week's move from 86482.8 USDT to 82731.7 USDT reflects flows on a multi-day scale. Using the former to explain the latter mixes up time horizons.

Second, high leverage turns that mismatch into real losses. A 2.6% single-day drop on 2026-10-07 followed by another 0.66% on 2026-10-08 squeezes positions on the wrong side repeatedly. A -4.34% weekly figure looks mild, but broken into daily moves it is not, and broken into high-leverage positions it is even less so.

Third, funding rates and gaps are two easily ignored costs. Perpetual contracts see funding rates swing back and forth in choppy declines, and anyone holding overnight pays for it. Small gaps such as the 2026-10-03 open of 84482.7 USDT against the prior close of 84482.8 USDT, or the 2026-10-04 open of 84710.5 USDT against the prior close of 84710.6 USDT, also remind traders that intraday entry levels affect outcomes. As for "the best week is a conclusion in hindsight" โ€” nobody knew the week of 2026-08-17 would gain 23.61% while it was happening, and reviewing after the fact is always easier than judging beforehand.

How the fees work out

The default maker fee on Binance contracts is 0.02%, and the default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%, which works out to an effective maker fee of 0.016% and an effective taker fee of 0.04% after the rebate. Price swung 4.34% this week, and frequent entries and exits will eat into that space, so knowing the effective cost is more controllable than guessing direction.
