A 5.03% weekly decline that sits in an unusual place
BTCUSDT opened the week at 86482.8 USDT and closed at 82134.5 USDT, a decline of 5.03%. Across a 200-week sample, this week ranks 176th, placing it in the latter half of the sample, meaning 175 weeks were stronger. At the same time, the most discussed topic on Square was the IMF saying the tokenized market remains small and fragmented, with sentiment leaning cautious. Putting the two together is worth doing, so let's break the week down day by day and compare it with the stronger weeks in the record.
How each day actually moved
| Date | open | close | change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-01 | 83576.8 USDT | 84829.6 USDT | 1.5% |
| 2026-10-02 | 84829.6 USDT | 84482.8 USDT | -0.41% |
| 2026-10-03 | 84482.7 USDT | 84710.6 USDT | 0.27% |
| 2026-10-04 | 84710.5 USDT | 86482.8 USDT | 2.09% |
| 2026-10-05 | 86482.8 USDT | 85717.2 USDT | -0.89% |
| 2026-10-06 | 85717.2 USDT | 85507.5 USDT | -0.24% |
| 2026-10-07 | 85507.6 USDT | 83281.9 USDT | -2.6% |
| 2026-10-08 | 83281.9 USDT | 82134.5 USDT | -1.38% |
The start of the week was not bad at all. On 10-01 price moved from 83576.8 USDT to 84829.6 USDT, a change of 1.5%; on 10-04 it pushed from 84710.5 USDT to 86482.8 USDT, a change of 2.09%, marking the high of the week. The turn came later: on 10-07 it fell from 85507.6 USDT to 83281.9 USDT, a decline of 2.6%, the heaviest single day of the week; on 10-08 it continued from 83281.9 USDT to 82134.5 USDT, a decline of 1.38%, closing at the week's low. The -0.89% on 10-05 and -0.24% on 10-06 looked modest on their own, but three down days in a row gave back the entire 10-04 candle. On a weekly basis, from 86482.8 USDT to 82134.5 USDT, the decline was 5.03%.
Where the stronger weeks got their strength
| Week start | open | close | change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023-01-09 | 17124.6 USDT | 20882.7 USDT | 21.95% |
| 2023-03-13 | 21986.2 USDT | 27955.7 USDT | 27.15% |
| 2024-02-26 | 51764.9 USDT | 63178.5 USDT | 22.05% |
| 2026-08-17 | 62876 USDT | 77719.1 USDT | 23.61% |
Among the stronger weeks in the data, the week of 2023-01-09 ran from 17124.6 USDT to 20882.7 USDT, a change of 21.95%; the week of 2023-03-13 ran from 21986.2 USDT to 27955.7 USDT, a change of 27.15%; the week of 2024-02-26 ran from 51764.9 USDT to 63178.5 USDT, a change of 22.05%; and the week of 2026-08-17 ran from 62876 USDT to 77719.1 USDT, a change of 23.61%. Those weeks pointed the opposite way from this one, and the magnitudes are not in the same league. This week ranks 176th out of 200 weeks including the current one, placing it in the latter half of the sample. In other words, line up 200 weeks and this one stands in the back half, with 175 weeks stronger ahead of it.
What Square posts are saying
Square posts argue that the IMF's remark about the tokenized market remaining small and fragmented suggests institutional adoption of these assets is moving more slowly than many expected (relayed, not this site's view). Another thread on Square reads this week's pullback alongside that headline, arguing the cautious mood did not appear on a single day but has been a persistent state. Some posts also caution that the "small and fragmented" description is about market structure, not short-term price direction, and treating it as a directional signal is easy to get wrong. These are only discussions on Square and do not constitute a view on where the market goes next.
Three things that are easy to miss
First, gaps. Looking at the daily table, 10-02 closed at 84482.8 USDT while 10-03 opened at 84482.7 USDT; 10-03 closed at 84710.6 USDT while 10-04 opened at 84710.5 USDT; 10-04 closed at 86482.8 USDT while 10-05 opened at 86482.8 USDT; 10-06 closed at 85507.5 USDT while 10-07 opened at 85507.6 USDT. These handoffs do not line up exactly, so compounding day by day gives a slightly different result from reading the weekly open and close directly. When calculating your own cost basis, actual fills are the better reference.
Second, leverage. On 10-07 the decline was 2.6% and on 10-08 it was 1.38%, two consecutive down days. Highly leveraged positions struggle to survive that kind of sequence. Even a correct directional call can be closed out early when margin runs short, which is a structural feature of leverage, not a question of being bullish or bearish.
Third, funding. Perpetual contracts use funding to keep price anchored near spot. When the market trends one way, funding leans persistently to one side and the cost of holding shifts with it. Many people watch only the entry price and the current price, overlook this expense, and find at settlement that realized profit and loss do not match expectations.
There is a more fundamental layer too: the best week is a conclusion reached in hindsight. The week of 2023-03-13 had a change of 27.15%, but nobody inside that week knew it would later be cited as a sample; this week's 176th rank also only exists once the week is finished. Using a completed week to infer the next one does not hold up logically.
How the fees work out
Binance's default maker fee on futures is 0.02% and the default taker fee is 0.05%. After a 20% rebate, the effective maker fee is 0.016% and the effective taker fee is 0.04%. In a week like this one, with several consecutive one-directional days, the more often you enter and exit, the more the 0.04% effective taker fee adds up, and frequency itself becomes part of the cost.
