BTCUSDT closed this week down 4.73%, moving from 86482.8 USDT to 82391.3 USDT. Against a 200-week sample, this week ranks 172nd, sitting in the back half of the sample โ 171 weeks were stronger, and only 28 were weaker. This was not a quiet drift sideways; it handed back the entire 2.09% gain printed on October 4. For anyone trading contracts, the more useful question is not the size of the drop but the fact that it happened while the news flow was at its loudest.

October 4 was the only real push higher: open 84710.5 USDT, close 86482.8 USDT, up 2.09% on the day. Then came three consecutive down days. On October 7 price slid from 85507.6 USDT to 83281.9 USDT, down 2.6%; on October 8 it fell further from 83281.9 USDT to 81711 USDT, down 1.89%. Those two candles together more than erased the October 4 gain. October 9 closed at 82391.3 USDT, up 0.83%, which slowed the slide a little but left price well below the 86482.8 USDT open of October 5. The shape of the week is clear: a push early, a giveback late, closing in the lower part of the range.
How the stronger weeks looked
Putting this week next to a few representative stronger weeks makes the contrast plain. The week of 2022-12-12 opened at 17077.3 USDT and closed at 16730.3 USDT, down 2.03% โ a smaller decline than this week. The week of 2022-12-19 gained 0.56%, the week of 2022-12-26 fell 1.27%, and the week of 2023-01-02 gained 3.1%. Further out, the week of 2023-01-09 gained 21.95%, the week of 2023-01-16 gained 8.72%, and the week of 2023-01-23 gained 4.56%.
In more recent samples, the week of 2026-08-17 gained 23.61%, the week of 2026-09-14 gained 5.65%, the week of 2026-09-21 gained 4.05%, and the week of 2026-09-28 gained 2.43%. Those weeks rank ahead not because they all rallied hard, but because their declines were smaller or they simply closed green. This week's 4.73% drop ranks 172nd out of 200, in the back half of the sample. That ranking says it plainly: not many weeks were weaker, but 171 were stronger.
What the hot Square posts are saying
Hot posts on Square argue that a US senator's investigation into the relationship between Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether could raise stablecoin regulatory concerns and spill over into overall crypto market sentiment (relayed, not this site's view). That framing lines up in time with this week's price action: the two down candles on October 7 and October 8 sit right inside the window when the news was building.
It is worth being clear that the hot posts offer a causal explanation, not a confirmed fact. How the investigation proceeds, and whether it ever turns into concrete rules, is undecided. Attributing a price drop to a single headline is the most common form of after-the-fact storytelling. Another camp on Square reads this week's pullback as an ordinary correction after an earlier advance, with the news simply landing at the same moment. Both are opinions; judge for yourself.
Three things easy to overlook
First, gaps and wicks are common in news-driven moves. On October 7, price opened at 85507.6 USDT and closed at 83281.9 USDT, down 2.6% on the day โ that kind of intraday range is enough to force deleveraging in high-leverage positions. You think you can hold through it because you only looked at the close, not the session.
Second, funding flips back and forth when direction is unclear. This week had both the 2.09% push on October 4 and the 2.6% drop on October 7, which is uncomfortable for both sides. Anyone holding overnight pays not just price movement but the back-and-forth cost of funding, and that cost grinds more during chop.
Third, the "best week" is always a conclusion in hindsight. The week of 2026-08-17 gained 23.61%, and nobody knew at the time it would rank near the top of the sample; this week ranks 172nd, and nobody can say right now whether it marks the end of this pullback. Treating a finished weekly candle as a repeatable template is one of the easiest ways to lose money.
The cost side
Binance's default maker fee on contracts is 0.02% and the default taker fee is 0.05%. After a 20% rebate, the effective maker fee is 0.016% and the effective taker fee is 0.04%. With this week's range, trading in and out several times adds up, and the gap between maker and taker is worth running through yourself.
