BTC Falls 4.57% This Week: Only 29 of 200 Weeks Were Weaker

Reused Bitcoin addresses and BTCUSDT dropping 4.57% this week landed in the same stretch of time. BTCUSDT moved from an open of 86482.8 USDT on 2026-10-05 to a close of 82534.8 USDT on 2026-10-10, a weekly decline of 4.57%. Out of 200 weekly samples, 170 weeks were stronger than this one, placing this week at rank 171 and in the latter half of the sample. For anyone trading the perpetual contract, the on-chain privacy discussion and the price action are two separate threads that happened to run in parallel.

Three days tell most of the story. 2026-10-04 was the only meaningful up day, opening at 84710.5 USDT and closing at 86482.8 USDT for a 2.09% gain. Then 2026-10-07 opened at 85507.6 USDT and closed at 83281.9 USDT, down 2.6%, followed by 2026-10-08 opening at 83281.9 USDT and closing at 81711 USDT, down 1.89%. Those two sessions gave back more than the 10-04 advance. The week closed at 82534.8 USDT on 2026-10-09 with a 1.01% gain that stopped the slide but did not change the shape of the week.

Where This Week Sits in 200 Weeks

With 200 weekly samples, 170 weeks were stronger than this one. This week ranks 171st and sits in the latter half of the sample. For comparison, the week of 2022-12-12 opened at 17077.3 USDT and closed at 16730.3 USDT, down 2.03%, a smaller decline than this week. The week of 2022-12-26 opened at 16824.5 USDT and closed at 16610.3 USDT, down 1.27%, also milder. On the stronger side, the week of 2023-01-09 opened at 17124.6 USDT and closed at 20882.7 USDT, up 21.95%; the week of 2023-03-13 opened at 21986.2 USDT and closed at 27955.7 USDT, up 27.15%; the week of 2024-02-26 opened at 51764.9 USDT and closed at 63178.5 USDT, up 22.05%; and the week of 2026-08-17 opened at 62876 USDT and closed at 77719.1 USDT, up 23.61%. Those gains are on a different scale from this week's -4.57%.

Trending posts on the Square argue that Bitcoin sitting for a long time in reused addresses is an underappreciated long-term issue (paraphrased, not this site's view). The discussion centers on two points: address reuse makes on-chain analysis easier, since holdings and transfer paths become simpler to link, and the fact that this BTC stays put says something about how holders weigh liquidity against privacy. Some posts tie the topic to price, suggesting that when on-chain privacy debate heats up, sentiment tends to tighten, citing this week's 4.57% decline as supporting evidence. These remain discussion points rather than verified facts.

Three Honest Points

First, gaps matter more in contracts than in spot. On 2026-10-07 the open of 85507.6 USDT sat almost exactly on the prior close of 85507.5 USDT, and on 2026-10-08 the open of 83281.9 USDT matched the prior close of 83281.9 USDT. No visible gap, yet the intraday move from 85507.6 USDT to 83281.9 USDT put far more stress on high leverage than the 2.6% close-to-close figure suggests.

Second, funding rates and on-chain narratives are separate tracks. The address reuse issue does not show up directly in funding rates, which reflect how crowded longs or shorts are at a given moment. Using an on-chain privacy topic as a reason to go long or short means explaining a fast variable with a slow one.

Third, the best week is always a conclusion in hindsight. The 21.95% of 2023-01-09, the 27.15% of 2023-03-13, and the 23.61% of 2026-08-17 look clean now, but nobody knew how those weeks would close while they were happening. A rank of 171st works the same way: it only exists after the close.

On Fees

Binance contract default maker fee is 0.02% and default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%, which brings the effective maker fee to 0.016% and the effective taker fee to 0.04%. A week with two consecutive down days usually means more back-and-forth trading than a flat week, and the fee difference compounds with frequency, which is easier to overlook than direction.
