BTC Falls 2.8% This Week, Ranking 150th of 200 Weeks as Leveraged ETF News Lands
SEC approval of a 3x Bitcoin ETF did not lift the tape this week: BTCUSDT closed -2.8%, ranking 150th out of 200 weekly samples.

The news landed, the tape went down
SEC approval of a 3x Bitcoin ETF puts leveraged Bitcoin exposure into a listed product, which reads as supportive for BTC itself, for platforms that earn on volume, and for companies holding coins. This week's closes did not cooperate. As of 2026-10-07, BTCUSDT moved from 86482.8 USDT to 84060.3 USDT, a weekly change of -2.8%. Over the same week COINUSDT was -1.83%, MSTRUSDT was -2.03% and HOODUSDT was -3.2%. All four reviewed pairs closed lower, with HOODUSDT the weakest. For anyone trading the headline long, the point is not whether the news is real, but that a headline and a price are separated by positioning, expectations, and the two-way nature of leveraged products.

Three days tell the story. 10-04 was the one constructive session: BTCUSDT went from 84710.5 USDT to 86482.8 USDT, up 2.09%, while MSTRUSDT added 0.89% and HOODUSDT added 1.07%, so the optimism did show up on the tape. 10-01 looked different: MSTRUSDT rose 5.08%, from 153.43 USDT to 161.22 USDT, reacting faster than BTC itself, which gained only 1.5% that day. By 10-07 all four fell together, with BTCUSDT down 1.69% from 85507.6 USDT to 84060.3 USDT, COINUSDT down 1.65%, MSTRUSDT down 2.09% and HOODUSDT down 1.21%. The week reads as one pop on the headline and several days of giving it back.
Against 200 weeks, this one is unremarkable
BTCUSDT has 200 weekly samples, 149 weeks were stronger than this one, and this week ranks 150th of 200 including itself, in the back half of the sample. In other words this is a below-average week, not one worth singling out. For reference, the week of 2023-01-09 ran from 17124.6 USDT to 20882.7 USDT, up 21.95%; 2023-03-13 ran from 21986.2 USDT to 27955.7 USDT, up 27.15%; 2024-02-26 ran from 51764.9 USDT to 63178.5 USDT, up 22.05%; 2026-08-17 ran from 62876 USDT to 77719.1 USDT, up 23.61%. All of those were stronger, and not by a little. COINUSDT has 35 weekly samples with 22 stronger weeks and ranks 23rd of 35, in the back half; MSTRUSDT is also 35 samples, 22 stronger, 23rd, back half; HOODUSDT is 36 samples, 22 stronger, 23rd, back half. Four different pairs point to the same conclusion about this week.
What the trending posts say
Trending posts on the Square argue that SEC approval of a 3x Bitcoin ETF is a key step in packaging Bitcoin exposure into a leveraged listed product, that companies holding coins and platforms earning on volume stand to benefit, and that COINUSDT, MSTRUSDT and HOODUSDT are the names to watch (relayed, not this site's view). Some posts add that leveraged products open a new funding channel and that bullish sentiment moves before price does. The logic holds up, but this week's closes did not confirm it: all four pairs finished lower, with COINUSDT at -1.83%, MSTRUSDT at -2.03% and HOODUSDT at -3.2% on the week. A view is a view, and the tape is the tape.
Three plain truths
One: a headline landing and a price rising have no fixed order. This week is the example, with the approval in hand and every reviewed pair negative on the week.
Two: leveraged exposure cuts both ways. A 3x product magnifies volatility, not direction, and holding one is not the same as holding a cheaper Bitcoin.
Three: funding rates and gaps are the costs most easily ignored here. US equity perpetuals can gap when the equity market is closed, and holding overnight means funding, either of which can eat into a correct call.
Four: the best week is always a conclusion in hindsight. Nobody knew 2023-01-09 would close up 21.95% or 2023-03-13 up 27.15% while they were happening, and a 150th-place ranking only exists after the close.
On fees
The default maker fee on Binance futures is 0.02% and the default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate share is 20%, which brings the effective maker fee to 0.016% and the effective taker fee to 0.04%. Set that against a -2.8% week and the cost is not a rounding error for anyone trading frequently.
