A 5.87% Weekly Drop: Where Funding Pressure Left Sentiment

ETHUSDT opened the week at 2725.71 USDT and closed at 2565.66 USDT, a weekly change of -5.87%, a decline of 5.87%. Across a 200-week sample, this week ranks 159th, placing it in the latter half of the sample. In other words, 158 of the past 200 weeks were stronger than this one, and only 41 were weaker. For anyone watching ETH funding conditions, the story is not the size of the drop but its shape: a single -4.58% day on 2026-10-07 erased gains built over the first four days, and the Ethereum spot ETF single-day net outflow headline landed right there.

How the Week's Daily Candles Played Out

2026-10-072696.45 USDT2572.88 USDT-4.58%
2026-10-082572.87 USDT2565.66 USDT-0.28%

This was not a steady grind lower. From 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-04, ETHUSDT moved from 2684.68 USDT to 2725.71 USDT, with three up days in four, including 1.48% on 2026-10-04. On 2026-10-05 and 2026-10-06 it slipped -0.62% and -0.45%, both modest, looking more like rotation than reversal. The turn came on 2026-10-07: open 2696.45 USDT, close 2572.88 USDT, a single-day -4.58%, a decline of 4.58%, one candle swallowing the entire range of the prior six days. On 2026-10-08 it opened at 2572.87 USDT and closed at 2565.66 USDT, -0.28%, a decline of 0.28%, with no meaningful bounce.

Split the week apart and the first four days of gains could not offset one day. That structure is unkind to short-term positioning: a position built at the 2026-10-04 close of 2725.71 USDT was in profit before 2026-10-07 and underwater a day later. The ETF outflow headline and that candle sit in the same window, and the funding pressure left a direct mark on price. One caveat: single-day flow data is high-frequency, reflecting that day's creations and redemptions, not a settled trend, but it does explain why selling on 2026-10-07 arrived so concentrated.

Where This Week Sits Across 200 Weeks

2023-01-161553.48 USDT1628.14 USDT4.81%

This week ranks 159th out of 200 weeks including the current one, placing it in the latter half of the sample. The count is blunt: 158 weeks were stronger, meaning only 41 were weaker. The weeks above are drawn from an earlier stretch of the sample: 2022-12-19 gained 3%, 2022-12-26 fell 1.48%, 2023-01-02 gained 7.47%, 2023-01-09 gained 20.46%, and 2023-01-16 gained 4.81%. Each of those weekly changes is stronger than this week's -5.87%, using the fact pack's own framing, which includes up weeks and weeks with smaller declines.

Zoom out and ETHUSDT has traded since its 2019-11-27 listing, accumulating 200 weekly samples. Ranking 159th puts this week in the latter half, so a -5.87% week is not extreme by ETH's own history, but it is not a week to wave off either. The sample contains weeks like 2025-05-05 at 39.03% and 2026-08-17 at 31.32%, and sitting on the same list makes this week's position easier to read.

Popular posts on the Square argue that the Ethereum spot ETF single-day net outflow is the direct driver of this ETH pullback, with capital leaving the ETF channel, thinner spot absorption, and faster downside when bids are absent (paraphrased, not the view of this site). Other popular posts focus on the 2026-10-07 candle, arguing that a single-day -4.58% move shows selling was released at one point rather than gradually, a pattern often accompanied by forced deleveraging (paraphrased, not the view of this site).

Some posts note that ETF flow is daily-frequency data, so a single-day net outflow is one slice, and the question is whether it is a one-day event or a multi-day run; a one-day event may repair faster, while a sustained run would make the 2565.66 USDT close a new observation point (paraphrased, not the view of this site). These are Square discussions only, not a market call and not the view of this site.

Three Things Easy to Miss

First, a gap and a single-day plunge are different things. On 2026-10-07 ETHUSDT opened at 2696.45 USDT and closed at 2572.88 USDT, and the intraday drop never recovered, which hurts overnight positions most because stop orders sit below and fast moves fill worse than expected. Second, high leverage gets magnified this week. The move from 2725.71 USDT to 2565.66 USDT is -5.87%, a drawdown for spot but a multiple of that on margin, and the 2026-10-07 candle is a textbook stress test.

Third, funding rates and ETF flows are different dimensions. ETF net outflow reflects creation and redemption flows, while funding rates reflect which side of the contract market is paying, and the two can align or diverge, so one cannot be used to derive the other. Fourth, and most important: the best week is a conclusion in hindsight. The 39.03% and 31.32% weeks in the sample looked like nothing special while they were happening, and this week's 159th rank in the latter half of the sample is a completed fact, not a forecast. Treating finished weekly candles as direction is a repeated trap.

The Cost Ledger for Trading This Week

Binance futures default maker fee is 0.02%, and the default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%, so after the rebate the effective maker fee is 0.016% and the effective taker fee is 0.04%. In a week like this, with a single-day -4.58% move on 2026-10-07, round trips add up, and the 0.04% effective taker fee comes straight out of P&L, more visible the more frequently you trade.
