The record spread fast, the price answered first

Sui's 40.6M TPS record circulated widely, but SUIUSDT did not follow through this week: the week opened at 1.2076 USDT and last closed at 1.1242 USDT, a weekly move of -6.91%. Over the same window, 120 of 180 weekly samples were stronger, placing this week at rank 121 and in the back half of the sample. The performance narrative is real, and so is the contract outcome. For contract traders, the point is not the record itself but how price behaved after it appeared.

2026-10-081.1276 USDT1.1242 USDT-0.3%

Three days tell the story. October 4 closed at 1.2077 USDT, the week's high close, with a 2.05% gain after October 3's 3.3% move. The turn came on October 6, closing at 1.1775 USDT, down -2.95%, giving back October 5's 1.2133 USDT close. October 7 closed at 1.1275 USDT, down -4.25%, the largest single-day drop of the week. By October 8, the close was 1.1242 USDT, down -0.3%. From 1.2133 USDT to 1.1242 USDT took three sessions, and most of the earlier gains were returned.

Where this week sits among 180 weeks

Using the stronger weeks as reference: 2023-05-08 opened at 1.2418 USDT and closed at 1.1581 USDT, down -6.74%; 2026-09-28 opened at 1.2633 USDT and closed at 1.2077 USDT, down -4.4%. Both were stronger than this week. Higher up, 2026-09-21 rose 40.85%, 2026-09-14 rose 27.91%, 2026-08-17 rose 26.79%, 2026-05-04 rose 44.86%, and 2025-04-21 rose 68.34%. With 120 of 180 weeks stronger, this week ranks 121st, in the back half of the sample.

Popular posts on the Square argue that Sui's 40.6M TPS record is a public proof of performance, and such news usually moves sentiment before it reaches price (paraphrased, not this site's view). Others focus on the narrative, saying repeated performance figures show continued interest in the chain's technical path (paraphrased, not this site's view). Put against the daily candles, sentiment and price did not sync: the news was hot, the week closed down -6.91%.

Three things easily overlooked

Gaps and wicks were common this week. October 2 opened at 1.1767 USDT and October 3 opened at 1.1456 USDT, a visible gap, so market orders often fill away from the quoted price.

High leverage has no buffer in a week like this. From 1.2133 USDT to 1.1242 USDT there was no meaningful bounce, and October 7's -4.25% alone could force leveraged positions out before direction even matters.

Funding fees keep draining cost during a slow decline. When price drifts sideways or lower, fees settle on a cycle, and the longer the hold, the more visible the expense.

One more: the best week is always a conclusion in hindsight. The week of 2025-04-21 rose 68.34% and the week of 2026-05-04 rose 44.86%, but nobody inside those weeks knew it at the time. Rank 121 is also a hindsight number.

Fees in plain terms

The Binance contract default maker fee is 0.02% and the default taker fee is 0.05%. With a 20% rebate, the effective maker fee is 0.016% and the effective taker fee is 0.04%. A round trip on taker fees costs twice 0.04%, which short-term traders should include in their P&L.
