Gold Fell 2.7% This Week: 34 of 43 Weeks Were Stronger
US August job openings hit a five-month low, lifting rate-cut expectations, yet XAUUSDT still fell 2.7% this week.

US August job openings fell to a five-month low, and the market read it as a signal that rate cuts are closer. Gold is supposed to benefit from that. Yet in the week of 2026-09-28, XAUUSDT moved from 4264.78 USDT to 4149.65 USDT, a weekly decline of 2.7%. Over the same week SPYUSDT fell 0.81%, QQQUSDT fell 1.01%, and IWMUSDT fell 1.17%. The narrative and the tape pointed in different directions, and that gap is worth looking at closely.
The heaviest candle of the week
Lay out the daily bars from 2026-09-22 to 2026-09-29 and the path is uneven.
| Date | Open | Close | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-22 | 4372.76 USDT | 4367.28 USDT | -0.13% |
| 2026-09-23 | 4367.27 USDT | 4292.3 USDT | -1.72% |
| 2026-09-24 | 4292.3 USDT | 4269.28 USDT | -0.54% |
| 2026-09-25 | 4269.29 USDT | 4292.88 USDT | 0.55% |
| 2026-09-26 | 4292.88 USDT | 4287.48 USDT | -0.13% |
| 2026-09-27 | 4287.47 USDT | 4264.79 USDT | -0.53% |
| 2026-09-28 | 4264.78 USDT | 4132.45 USDT | -3.1% |
| 2026-09-29 | 4132.46 USDT | 4149.65 USDT | 0.42% |
Three days tell most of the story. 2026-09-25 was the only meaningful bounce, from 4269.29 USDT to 4292.88 USDT, up 0.55%, and the next session gave it back. The week's direction was decided on 2026-09-28, which opened at 4264.78 USDT and closed at 4132.45 USDT, down 3.1% in a single session, swallowing the earlier chop. On 2026-09-29 it opened at 4132.46 USDT and closed at 4149.65 USDT, up 0.42%, which slowed the slide but left it far from the week's opening 4372.76 USDT.
In the same data set, SPYUSDT rose from 766.57 USDT to 772.65 USDT on 2026-09-25, up 0.79%, its best day of the week; QQQUSDT moved from 740.1 USDT to 746.06 USDT the same day, up 0.81%. Risk assets had a midweek window, and so did gold. Gold simply closed that window on 2026-09-28.
Against 43 weekly samples, this week does not rank high
XAUUSDT has 43 weekly samples, and 34 weeks were stronger than this one. A 2.7% decline puts this week in the weaker part of the sample, not in extreme territory.
Take a few stronger weeks for comparison. The week of 2026-01-19 ran from 4673.21 USDT to 5022.15 USDT, up 7.47%; the week of 2026-08-03 ran from 4080.99 USDT to 4337.4 USDT, up 6.28%; the week of 2026-08-17 ran from 4375.17 USDT to 4628.17 USDT, up 5.78%; the week of 2026-02-02 ran from 4769.1 USDT to 5028.31 USDT, up 5.44%; the week of 2025-12-22 ran from 4342 USDT to 4536.59 USDT, up 4.48%. Each of those gains is larger than this week's decline, and in the opposite direction.
The sample also contains weaker weeks. The week of 2026-02-09 ran from 5028.4 USDT to 5020.8 USDT, down 0.15%; the week of 2026-09-21 ran from 4376.99 USDT to 4264.79 USDT, down 2.56%. This week's 2.7% decline is weaker than both. Put the raw values side by side and the position is clear: this week fell more than the week of 2026-09-21, but it is nowhere near the worst in the sample.
SPYUSDT has 26 weekly samples with 20 stronger weeks; QQQUSDT also has 26 samples with 20 stronger weeks; IWMUSDT has 17 samples with 10 stronger weeks. All four instruments sit in the lower half of their samples this week.
What popular posts in the Square say
Popular posts in the Square argue that US August job openings at a five-month low makes the Fed's path to rate cuts smoother, which should benefit both gold and US equity risk assets (relayed, not the view of this site). Other posts focus on sequencing, arguing that after the data the market first trades expectations and then trades reality, and that gold's decline on 2026-09-28 shows expectations did not immediately turn into buying.
Each of those readings has its own logic, but the tape is more direct: this week XAUUSDT fell 2.7%, SPYUSDT fell 0.81%, QQQUSDT fell 1.01%, and IWMUSDT fell 1.17%. Not one of the four rose. Macro data pointing one way while the week's prices point the other is not rare in this sample. Treating popular posts as an interpretive frame is fine; treating them as a settled outcome goes too far.
Three things that are easy to miss
A gap and a single-session slide are different events. On 2026-09-28, XAUUSDT opened at 4264.78 USDT and closed at 4132.45 USDT, down 3.1%, and that move was built through the session rather than gapped away at the open. A move built through the session offers bounces and exit points along the way; a gap does not. Confusing the two turns a manageable decline into an unmanageable surprise.
High leverage turns a weekly move into an account-level problem. A 2.7% weekly decline in XAUUSDT is a drawdown from a spot perspective, and something else entirely on a high-leverage contract. Leverage does not change price direction, only your capacity to sit through it. Choosing a leverage level is choosing in advance how much adverse movement you can absorb.
Funding is a hidden cost of holding, and being right on direction is not automatically enough. Perpetual contracts use funding to keep price near spot, and the longer you hold, the more certain that cost becomes. Many traders watch only the entry price and the current price, treat funding as a rounding error, and find a week later that it consumed part of what the direction should have earned.
"The best week is a conclusion reached in hindsight" applies here too. The week of 2026-01-19 gained 7.47% and the week of 2026-08-03 gained 6.28%, and those numbers only existed after the close. At the start of those weeks, nobody knew. Using the strongest historical week as a template for the future mistakes the result for the cause.
Work out the fees before arguing about direction
Binance contract default maker fee is 0.02% and default taker fee is 0.05%. The rebate ratio is 20%, which puts the effective maker fee after rebate at 0.016% and the effective taker fee after rebate at 0.04%.
Those three sentences are worth repeating before any entry. Maker and taker are priced differently, and a week of frequent taker entries and exits turns that difference into a real cost. A correct directional call with an unclear cost structure still lands a different number in the account than expected.
