Buying Crypto for the First Time: Signup → ID Verification → Deposit → First Order, Step by Step With the Pitfalls at Each Stage

One-line answer: Five steps — ① pick an exchange you can legally use where you live ② register (attach the rebate code here; it can't be added later) ③ verify identity (ID + face, often minutes) ④ deposit (three routes, each with its own trap) ⑤ buy a small amount of BTC or ETH with a limit order. Step 1: Pick an exchange — "can I use it?" comes before everything

The most common beginner mistake is choosing by ranking, then discovering halfway through signup that their region is restricted. Every exchange opens differently to different countries, and it changes often. Our exchange list filters by your location and shows only what you can use.

Among those, beginners need three checks:

• Size and liquidity (orders fill instantly, spreads are tight) — all major venues qualify;
• Fees: the six majors differ very little at the default tier (see How fees work) — not the deciding factor;
• Deposit convenience: how your money actually gets in (Step 4) — the real beginner hurdle.

Step 2: Register — the one irreversible step

Email/phone, password, like any site. But one thing can only be done right now: attaching the rebate code.

Rebates are the exchange's official program: with a code, a share of every future fee returns to your account (Binance user side 20%; other exchanges in our rebate guide). Adding it later is impossible or tightly conditioned at most exchanges. So: get the code first, then register. The signup links on our exchange pages already carry it.

Two security habits at signup: don't reuse a password from elsewhere; turn on two-factor authentication immediately (an authenticator app, not SMS only).

Step 3: Identity verification (KYC) — without it you can look but not buy

Upload ID/passport + face check. Usually minutes to hours; peak periods or blurry documents can take a day or two. Unverified accounts typically can't deposit or trade, so do this right after signup.

Tips: document must be valid; do the face check in good light; name spelling must match the document exactly.

Step 4: Deposit — three routes, where beginners get hurt most

Step 5: The first order — limit, small, majors only

1. Open Spot trading (not Futures);
2. Pick BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT;
3. Choose a limit order (not market), price near the current best bid;
4. Small size (say 50–100 USDT equivalent), place it;
5. Wait for the fill; BTC appears under "Assets" — done.

Why limit: a limit order is a maker order with a lower fee than a market (taker) order, and it can't fill badly in a thin book. Fees on a 1,000 USDT spot trade are about 1,000 × 0.1% = ~1 USDT — not the thing to worry about at this step; wrong order type is.

Three things not to do on day one

1. No futures / leverage. Futures carry funding rates and liquidation; on day one you haven't even nailed how fees work — see Futures beginner mistakes;
2. No coins you've never heard of. Small caps have wide spreads, thin liquidity and real go-to-zero risk; sticking to BTC/ETH for the first month costs you nothing;
3. Don't move all your money in at once. Walk the whole loop small first (deposit → buy → sell → withdraw), then scale.

Security trio (do it on day one)

• 2FA: authenticator app, not SMS only;
• Anti-phishing code: set one in security settings; every real email from the exchange will carry it, so any email without it is fake;
• Withdrawal whitelist: only allow withdrawals to addresses you've confirmed.

FAQ

Q: How long does this take? Signup minutes; KYC minutes to a day or two; deposit depends on route (card fastest, P2P ~15 min, on-chain minutes to an hour). Finishing the whole loop on day one is normal.

Q: Do I have to use a referral code? What if I don't? You can register without one — you simply get no fee returned, and you mostly can't add it later. A code costs nothing and doesn't change your rate; there's only upside.

Q: Is it safe to leave coins on the exchange? Small, actively traded balances are fine with 2FA on; large, long-term holdings belong in your own wallet — an advanced topic, not for week one.

Q: Can I buy with a credit card? Most exchanges allow it, but fees are high, some banks decline, and buying crypto with borrowed money is the one thing a beginner should never do.
